“LUCY”. . . . 30 YEARS LATER
Dr. Hal Mahan, zoologist and owner of The Compleat Naturalist shop in Biltmore Village will present a slide lecture to discuss the hominid fossil “Lucy” and other work on early humans during the past 30 years. His presentation will take place at the Colburn Earth Science Museum in Pack Place and is scheduled for November 13, 2005 at 4:00pm .
In 1974, Dr. Mahan, then director of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History was involved in the discovery of a hominid fossil found in Ethiopia by celebrated anthropologist Don Johanson. Nicknamed “Lucy”, the world's oldest and best preserved hominid fossil was dated at 350 million years old. Since the discovery of “Lucy”, there have been many other relevant finds that have helped scientists piece together the evolution of early humans. Dr. Mahan will discuss his experiences with interpreting “Lucy” and will highlight the scientific progress over the past 30 years.
