Member's Only Hike into Worley's Cave with Nancy Aulenbach

Join famous cave explorer Nancy Aulenbach for an in-depth look into Worley's Cave in Tennessee. The cave is called “Worley's Cave,” and sometimes “Morril's Cave” and is known for its voluminous size with rooms more than 75 feet wide and 250 feet long with high ceilings that often exceeds 100 feet. It is noted for its beautiful formations within its eight to ten miles of passages. Pre-registration required. Please reserve your spot before September 25th by calling the Colburn Museum at 828-254-7162.
Trip Details
- The cave we will be visiting is in Elizabethton, TN and is approximately a 1 ½ hour drive from Asheville.
- There is a cost for parking at the cave so trip participants will carpool as much as possible. Everyone should plan to meet off of Hwy 240 at the Westgate Shopping Center in front of Earth Fare at 8:00am on Saturday, October 1 st .
- We should return to Asheville no later than 8:00pm
- Participants must be 10 or older, and children under 16 must be accompanied by their guardian at all times throughout the trip.
- The cave is 52 degrees and muddy, and we will exit via a large stream passage (no swimming), so participants should plan on getting completely wet and muddy from head to toe!
Below is a list of gear that each participant should bring on the trip:
1. Caving helmet SUPPLIED
2. Helmet-mounted light SUPPLIED
* 3. Two other lights, with one being helmet-mountable (These can be
bought at Wal-Mart really cheap)
*4. Extra set of batteries for lights
5. Gloves (cheap garden ones or such)
6. Knee pads (Bike brand or Spalding are cheap)
7. Sturdy boots with good tread
8. Warm socks
9. Warm clothing that one doesn't mind getting trashed, such as jeans
and sweatshirt, etc.
10. Sturdy pack, such as large fanny pack or backpack that will get
trashed
*11. Resilient candy bars, such as Snickers or Baby Ruth's, beef
jerky, or other bomb-proof food for in-cave, and in a waterproof
zip-loc
*12. PLASTIC bottle of water for drinking
*13. Any medication that is necessary, such as for epilepsy, etc. in
WATERPROOF container.
14. Large outdoor trash bag
15. COMPLETE change of clothes- don't forget underwear and shoes!
16. Some really satisfying food for the car-ride home. You'll be
hungry!
* Items with an asterisk should be in the backpack before we drive to the cave to save time
**There will be a $10 charge per person: - $5 for the rental of the helmet and the helmet mounted lamp and - $5 for parking at the entrance of the cave
